Are You a Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapist in Need of a Copywriter?

As a therapist, you know the importance of using language that resonates with your clients and is sensitive to their unique needs.

You strive to create an inclusive space where your clients can feel seen and heard in session, but you also want your values to be accurately portrayed by your website. Because that’s what your website is designed to do — reach the people you intend to help.

That’s where a neurodiversity-affirming copywriter comes in!

Hi, I’m Christine, and I’m a neurodivergent copywriter. I love partnering with neurodiversity-affirming therapists and psychologists who celebrate the beautiful diversity of the human mind.

I partner with you so your website captures your unique practice and voice as a neurodivergent-affirming therapist.

The Power of Neurodiversity-Affirming Copy

When you’re neurodivergent, finding a therapist who truly understands the challenges of navigating a world designed for neurotypicals can be a lifeline. But how will your clients know you’re that therapist if your website doesn’t speak their language?

Imagine your client — someone who might feel like their brain is running on a different operating system — and is chronically burned out because of it. They’ve tried to communicate in a neurotypical world, but it often feels like they’re speaking a different language. They might struggle with understanding social cues, feel overwhelmed by sensory input, or find it hard to connect with others despite their best efforts. They’ve learned to mask their true selves just to fit in, but it’s exhausting, and they’re longing for a safe space to be authentic.

When they read your website, they should see themselves in your words. They should feel that you understand not only their struggles but also their strengths. They need to know that you’re not here to “fix” them, but to support them in harnessing the incredible power of their unique brain.

If you’re a neurodiversity-affirming therapist, you want potential clients to recognize themselves in the language you’re using. You want them to feel confident reaching out knowing that you are the inclusive, affirming therapist they need.

How can a copywriter help you as a neurodivergent-affirming therapist?

I understand the nuances of neurodivergent experiences because I live them! I’m committed to helping you create content that reflects your understanding, empathy, and dedication to neurodiversity-affirming care. Together, we can:

  • Craft copy that resonates: Your website should feel like a safe, welcoming space that celebrates neurodiversity. I’ll help you use language that speaks directly to neurodivergent clients, making them feel understood and valued rather than misunderstood or marginalized.

  • Highlight your expertise: Whether through blog posts, social media content, or web pages, we’ll showcase your skills and knowledge in working with neurodivergent individuals.

  • Align with your practice values: Your content should reflect the affirming, inclusive care you provide. We’ll make sure every word on your site aligns with your therapeutic approach and philosophy.

I understand that neurodivergent-affirming therapy is not about changing clients. It’s about helping them learn to love every unique function of their brain while unearthing the skills they already have and identifying the skills they’d like to develop.

In neurodivergent-affirming therapy your patients may want to explore:

  • The stress of navigating traditional systems designed for neurotypical individuals

  • How to leverage the skills you already have

  • Your experience with ableism (internalized or not)

  • Your neurodivergent identity

  • Sensory needs and sensory regulation

  • Emotions (in a way that feels right to you and honors your needs)

  • Coping skills

  • Accommodations for a professional setting

  • Diagnosis (or self-diagnosis)

  • Your goals for therapy

Together, we will create a website that reflects your knowledge, values, and skills as a neurodiversity-affirming therapist, while highlighting the ways you can meet your clients’ diverse needs.

[Schedule a free consultation]

You may have potential clients seeking neurodivergent-affirming therapy because they’re looking for the clarity and self-understanding a diagnosis would provide. Perhaps they have suspected for a long time that they are different, and they would like an official diagnosis for school, work, or for their own personal understanding and exploration. If diagnosis is a part of your practice as a clinical psychologist, I can write a web page designed to make diagnosis feel accessible and empowering.

Or perhaps potential clients may be seeking neurodivergent-affirming therapy because they need a safe space where they can be themselves and unmask, regardless of whether or not they have (or are seeking) a diagnosis. As a neurodivergent-affirming therapist, you understand the variety in communication styles and differences in sensory needs that often accompany neurodivergence. This will impact the way you connect with neurodivergent folks in session, and this should be reflected in your website copy.

We work as partners to affirm neurodivergent identities.

In session, you help your clients figure out how to leverage the power of their amazing brain and thrive in a world that caters to neurotypicals.

Let your website reflect the amazing work that you do.

Ready to Connect?

If you’re looking to create a more inclusive and affirming online presence, let’s talk.

Having a support network that understands and appreciates the ins and outs of neurodivergent-affirming therapy can give you more time to focus on your clients instead of on your website. Get in touch today!

Why You Should Hire a (Failed) Therapist to Write Your Copy

Why You Should Hire a (Failed) Therapist to Write Your Copy

Mental health copywriting — or copywriting for therapists — is not your mom’s average copywriting. It’s a very specific niche and requires a very specific tone.

Copywriting for therapists should be:

  • Genuine

  • Empathetic

  • Sensitive

  • Written in accordance with the therapist’s values & voice

People are seeking out your services for many reasons. Maybe they’re in crisis. Or they’re processing a traumatic event. Maybe they want to figure out why they are the way they are. Maybe they’re digging into family of origin issues. Or maybe they’re just in need of a listening ear. Whatever the reason, people need you and your valuable services.

And a copywriter who specializes in mental health copywriting for therapists can help you help more people with less effort.

What is a mental health copywriter?

A copywriter is someone who writes in a way that gets people to act. A mental health copywriter is an empathetic, sensitive soul who understands what you do and the challenges your clients face. They make sure your therapy superpowers are getting across so current/potential clients feel understood and want to utilize your services.

Storytime!

I was a therapist, once.

I went to USC. Worked as a therapist at a charter school in Los Angeles for my practicum. Completed 240 face-to-face hours for graduation. Got my master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy.

And then I burned out and quit.

I’m not sorry it happened. Because mental health copywriting is the perfect intersection of all my interests. I get to research incredibly interesting topics like infant mental health, child psychology, anxiety disorders, attachment trauma, etc. every day and write about them for a living!

Because of my training as a therapist, I understand therapist jargon, I know how long and grueling your days are, and I know what it’s like to have clients struggling with (often severe) mental health challenges. This means I can speak your language and I appreciate what it is that you do because I myself couldn’t do it. So, don’t be like me.

Don’t try to do everything by yourself, all at once in your practice.

You’ll burnout.

Instead, hire a copywriter who writes for therapists.

“But Christine. What types of copy could I possibly need, as a therapist?”

I’m so glad you asked.

A mental health copywriter can write:

  • Psychology Today profiles that don’t suck

  • SEO optimized blogs on topics you’re excited about

  • A rockin’ newsletter that informs current clients and/or people you can’t take on because your caseload is full

  • Social media captions

  • Marketing emails to get people to sign up for your life-changing online course

  • The content of that life-changing online course ;)

  • Podcast scripts

  • Landing pages

  • Sales pages

  • Ebooks

  • And so much more!

When you work with me, I find out what’s unique about you, your practice, and I make sure your therapy wizardry is getting translated so people know what you do and how you can help them.

Intrigued?

Book a free 30-minute call with me so we can chat! We’ll discuss what YOU need and take some stuff off your plate. Take yourself off the road to burnout. Let’s journey together toward the fulfilling private practice you’ve always hoped for!

The one thing you should look for when hiring a copywriter for your private practice.

3 Things to Know About Hiring a Copywriter for Your Therapy Practice

It can be really overwhelming to look for a therapist.

Some people get so intimidated, they never even start.

The brave ones might open their computer and type “therapist near me” so Google comes up with thousands of names for them to sift through.

Or they might look at PsychologyToday.com profiles and try to glean from a picture and dry description of services whether you—a total stranger—are going to be the one they tell their deepest, darkest secrets to.

How are they supposed to know if you’re the right fit for them over all the others?

1.   A mental health copywriter writes your website copy so you stand apart from the rest.

You know you care about anyone who comes to you seeking help. But how do potential clients know that?

What are you saying in your bio or on your site to make them feel understood and seen before you even meet?

A great website will allow you to speak directly to your ideal clients…

… the ones you just click with. Your website should be an authentic reflection of who you are and how you operate in your practice.

But right now, it’s just… not.

That’s why you need a mental health copywriter who specializes in working with therapists.

2.   You shouldn’t just hire any copywriter

You should hire one who specializes in mental health copywriter for therapists.

What’s a copywriter?

A copywriter is someone who writes copy. Sounds straightforward enough, right?

Copy is everywhere—on websites, cereal boxes, advertisements, in emails—you literally cannot go a single day without encountering some form of copy!

But a copywriter doesn’t just write—they write in a way that gets people to act.

In essence, they’re a content marketing wizard.

They find out what’s unique about you and your business and make sure your superpowers are getting translated to the general public.

Every therapist has a specialty of some kind.

Yes, even you!

Maybe you specialize in group work or trauma, couples counseling or art therapy.

And maybe your potential clients have no idea because they either can’t find you in the sea of therapists, or they’re just not vibin’ with the site or PsychologyToday.com profile you have going right now.

A mental health copywriter who has experience writing for people in private practice will understand:

·       What you do

·       Why it’s important

·       How to talk about your services in a way that’s sensitive, empathetic, and authentic

Copywriters for therapists have experience working with sensitive topics, and their writing reflects that.

3.   Hiring a mental health copywriter means one thing: less work for you.

Face it—you have enough going on as it is! Between all the referrals you received during COVID-19 and your current client list, you probably have a waitlist a mile long! Don’t you wish there was a way to reach all your current clients and all the folks you don’t have time to take on right now?

Hint: there is a way!

A mental health copywriter can write any of the following things for you and your business:

·       SEO optimized mental health blogs

·       The newsletter you *technically* have but have done nothing with

·       Psychology Today profiles

·       Social media captions

·       Email funnels to get people to sign up for your latest online course

·       Podcast scripts

·       And so much more!

There are so many ways you can provide meaningful content to folks out there—even if you never see them for individual therapy.

Don’t let yourself get on the road to burnout when you’re preaching health day in and day out to your clients.

Remember why you went into this field in the first place.

Hire someone to help you expand your reach with empathetic, authentic copy written in your voice.

3 Things to Know About Hiring a Mental Health Copywriter for Your Private Practice

If you’re a therapist in private practice, you have to know how to market yourself so you’re reaching your ideal clients, building authority in your niche, and charging what you deserve. Hiring a mental health copywriter can help you do that.

But… Marketing. It’s got kind of a bad rap.

When you think of marketing yourself, do you cringe? Does it make you feel like a sell-out?

It doesn’t have to.

You know your services are helping others. What you’re selling is healing. As a therapist, you walk with your clients on a journey to mental health, wellness, healing, and happiness. I know because I’m trained as an MFT. And I’ve been in therapy myself for over ten years. I wholeheartedly believe in what you do. But if you aren’t careful, you’ll be on the road to burnout rather than on the road to building the practice of your dreams.

A mental health copywriter can help you in a few different ways. Copywriting isn’t like academic writing. It’s conversational. Friendly. It can break the rules of grammar or convention. But writing for therapists is different. A mental health copywriter will know how to write sensitively in your authentic voice. A copywriter for therapists will write in a way that’s trauma-informed and empathetic.

Copywriting for Therapists

  1. A copywriter for your private practice should know how to write for Google.

That way your ideal clients are finding you so you can:

  • Niche down

  • Build the private practice of your dreams

  • Be fully booked at a higher rate

  • Launch a passive income stream for those individuals who can’t see you for 1:1 sessions

That’s why investing in a mental health copywriter who understands SEO is so important.

An SEO copywriter, more specifically, an SEO mental health copywriter, helps people find you when they do a search on Google.

It’s also important that you hire a copywriter who uses professional, relatable language that is trauma-informed and sensitive because of the nature of your work. You should also hire someone who understands SEO in addition to the world of mental health. SEO-optimized copy helps you get noticed on Google searches, and blogs in particular are great for SEO.

2. A mental health copywriter should write in your voice.

In addition to attracting people to your site, a mental health copywriter will write your homepage in a way that makes your ideal clients feel connected to you. The most important thing in therapy is arguably the therapeutic relationship, right? And that relationship can start from the second someone learns about you and what you offer. Your website will speak directly to your ideal client so they feel inspired to book your services. And your less than ideal client? Well, they’ll keep on searching because they’ll be able to tell you’re not a good fit for them. You’ll save yourself the time and headache of referring out and work with exactly who you want to work with.

3. When you hire a copywriter for your private practice, they’ll work with you to find out what kinds of copy you need.

As a therapist, you’ll probably find these types of copy most useful:

  • Freebies for an email list opt-in

  • Email welcome sequences for new subscribers

  • Newsletters and regular emails

  • Search engine optimized (SEO) blogs, landing pages, website pages

  • Psychology Today profiles

  • Social media posts

If you already have an email list but aren’t sure how to engage with it, a copywriter can help. Newsletters can tell current clients what you’re up to, like if you’re teaching a workshop or offering a new online course. Emails can provide your clients (or even just your email subscribers, whom you may not see 1:1 in therapy!) with helpful tips on how to manage their mental health, relationships, reduce stress at work, etc. There are so many ways you can help people even if you aren’t seeing them in individual or group therapy. And an email list is one way to expand your reach.

If you don’t have a copywriter you work with right now, you’re probably:

  • Doing more than you need to with less time

  • Working on aspects of your business you don’t enjoy

  • Busier than you want to be and making less money than you could

  • On the road to burnout

5 Types of Copy a Mental Health Copywriter Can Help You With

You’re exhausted after your long days — client sessions, writing notes, running groups. You barely have time to practice the self-care you preach to your own clients. The last thing you want to do is go home and write a blog, engage with potential clients on social media, or type up your newsletter.

Luckily, there’s a solution.

Your practice needs a copywriter.

Specifically, a mental health copywriter.

When you hire a copywriter who specializes in writing for therapists, you’re setting yourself — and your practice — up for success.

Do you want your time back? Do you want to spend less time staring at your computer screen trying to come up with an informative blog post or a clever social media caption? And more time doing what you actually love? Then hire a copywriter! There are so many types of copy we can help you with.

Wondering what types of copy a mental health copywriter can help you with?

  1. Website copy

This includes your about me page, your website landing page, your services, etc. It’s written to inform your clients and potential clients in a way that inspires them to take action — like booking an appointment or joining a therapy group you facilitate.

2. Blog posts

Blog posts typically inspire or inform. If you need multiple posts each month, you can request a retainer and see if your copywriter will offer a bundle discount.

3. Newsletters

Newsletters keep your subscribers in the loop on all things pertaining to your practice. Offering a new course? Moving your private practice location? Speaking at a conference? Updates like these can go in a monthly or quarterly newsletter. A newsletter offers bite-sized info your clients are eager to digest.

4. Podcast scripts

New to the podcasting world? A copywriter can write you a script that’s conversational, well-researched, and informative.

5. Social media captions

You probably don’t want to spend your evenings planning social media content or responding to comments. A copywriter does all of that for you and tailors the CTAs (calls to action) to fit the social media channel.

How to find a mental health copywriter

There are a few ways to find someone who writes copy for therapists. Try using LinkedIn. Type in “mental health copywriter” or “copywriter for therapists” in the LinkedIn search bar and you may be surprised by how many people are ready to help your business!

Facebook is another great way to find copywriters. Join copywriting groups to find writers looking for clients, or if you’re in a therapist group, post your need for a copywriter.

Seek a referral. Talk to your therapist friends and colleagues. Some of them may already be working with a copywriter they can refer you to!

Keep an eye out for cold emails. Great copywriters write catchy cold emails that grab your attention, solve your pain points, and offer solutions to address your copy needs.

Mental health copywriters…

Do the writing so you don’t have to

Your time is already limited. You don’t want to spend your lunch breaks or evenings writing an email sequence, a newsletter, blogs, or social media captions! In fact, maybe you feel overwhelmed just reading that list. A mental health copywriter does all that for you. We place every word, hyphen, and capital letter into meticulously crafted copy designed to convert readers into clients.

Copywriters spend all day writing, researching and editing. We do it day in and day out. We take the writing off of your plate so you can get back to what you love most — serving your clients.

The best part for us? We love to write! And people who write mental health copy for therapists do it for a reason.

Specialize in writing copy for therapists

We know the field. Some of us have been therapists ourselves. We get the stress, the burnout, and the pain points that both you and your clients experience.

Copywriters who write for therapists understand how important it is to preserve your authentic voice when writing about the things that matter most to you.

We write well-researched copy so you become (or stay) an authority in your field. Empathy, authenticity, and professionalism are of the highest importance.

Plus, we’re passionate about mental health. Copywriters choose their niche. If they’re anything like me, they chose a niche they’re passionate about and could spend hours (literally) researching!

Use marketing skills

You may be an excellent writer yourself. But academic writing is way different from writing copy.

Copy gets people to take action.

You want people to book an appointment or sign up for your course. Good copy will help you achieve your business goals.

You may already be writing for the skimmer, the digger, and Google. Or you may not. Copywriters for therapists know how to write for all three audiences to expand your reach.

Write for Google

We use SEO to help you get noticed on Google.

Copywriters who specialize in writing for mental health professionals know what keywords to use so people can find your practice and services more easily.

Support you so you can support your clients

Writing about mental health isn’t for everyone. Copywriters for therapists probably love the field (almost!) as much as you do. Our brains are filled with mental health buzzwords, blog topics, ideas for courses, and so much more! A good copywriter works with you to achieve your vision. You may have a ton of good ideas for how to market your business, or you may have none at all! We work with you to come up with a plan you feel good about.

Next steps

It’s time to take action and hire a copywriter who specializes in writing for therapists!

Why Your Private Therapy Practice Needs a Website to Attract More Clients

You’re a therapist in private practice. Maybe you’ve been in the field for decades, or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you’ve done 20+ years of school to learn the skills you need to be an excellent therapist.

But none of your classes taught you how to…

  • Make a good website

  • Write for SEO

  • Produce a consistent blog with useful content

So you put up a website just to have something Googleable. It might even look like it’s left over from the dial-up days of the internet Stone Age. But does your web presence really matter if you’re a good therapist?

Let me explain.

How Do I Know if My Private Practice Has a Good Website?

Your private practice website should accomplish three goals. And they all involve helping clients. You have a good website if:

  1. It helps clients get to know who you are as a therapist.

And I don’t mean just listing all of your credentials. Clients want to know you’re trustworthy and helpful. Use your “About Me” page as an opportunity to tell them what your therapeutic orientation is, why you got into the field in the first place (if it’s relevant to your practice’s values and principles,) and showcase your passion for helping others. Your picture should be warm and reflect authenticity. First impressions really do matter.

2. It helps clients understand how you’re going to help them.

For someone who’s considering therapy for the first time, it can seem daunting and even a bit scary. Not everyone understands how therapy even works. (A 50-minute hour? Whoever heard of such a thing? And why would I tell a stranger all my deepest darkest secrets anyway?) Assuage clients’ fears and anxieties by explaining what it is you do and how they can find relief in seeking your services.

3. It helps clients feel connected to you.

By the time they’re done reading your website, clients should feel inspired to book an appointment with you. You accomplish this call to action in three ways:

  • You speak to your ideal client.

  • You put yourself in their shoes.

  • You don’t sacrifice your authenticity or empathy.

Let me ask you this:

Which bio sounds more empathetic to you?

Version 1:

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) with fifteen years of experience treating adolescent depression and anxiety. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat social anxiety, test anxiety, depression, and help clients navigate difficult emotions so they can make behavioral changes.

Version 2:

Are you asking yourself: does my teenager need therapy?

If you are, you’re not alone.

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in teen therapy. For over fifteen years I’ve helped teens develop healthy self-esteem, cope with intense emotions, and overcome anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. I foster a safe environment where teens feel heard and understood — not judged.

Version 2 sounds way better, right?

It all comes down to the copy.

Version 1 is OK… that person sounds qualified… but they also sound stuffy. Clinical. And difficult to connect with.

The person in Version 2 still sounds qualified. But they also sound approachable. Compassionate. Kind.

Who would you rather hire as your teen’s therapist?

So what is copy?

Simply put, copy is writing that encourages people to take action. As a therapist, you’re selling a valuable service — the therapy that so many people desperately want and need (especially after two years of a global pandemic!) But if they can’t find you on the internet, or they can’t connect with the person you’re portraying on your website — you can’t help them. That’s why you need search engine optimized copy on your website and a copywriter who makes you shine.

The words on your website represent you — a real human — to your potential clients. Hire a copywriter to write mental health website copy in your authentic voice so you feel accurately represented.

Your niche should be clear — do you offer Christian counseling services? Do you specialize in family therapy? And good copy uses the right keywords in your niche so you are easy to find amongst a sea of other private practice practitioners.

Your private practice website should also be clean and easy to navigate. There are several great website-building tools out there: Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, and WordPress, to name a few. While a copywriter won’t build your website for you, they can make sure the words on every page of your site are strategically placed.

3 Things Not to Do on Your Private Practice Website

Here are 3 common mistakes therapists make on private practice websites.

  1. Your website copy sounds like an academic paper.

Your clients don’t want to read your master’s thesis. They aren’t interested in the newest journal publication you have under your belt. They want to know they’re signing up to talk to a real human who gets them.

I know you got into this field for a reason. I bet it’s because you like making people feel seen, valued, accepted, and heard.

Your website should reflect that.

2. You Ignore SEO.

I get it — SEO is a PITA. But if you want to be discoverable on Google, you have to care about SEO.

Your private practice therapy website will bring in organic traffic if it’s search engine optimized. This means that people will find you on Google if you’re using the right keywords.

If you have a blog, that’s even better. Not only will you provide valuable content to current or prospective clients and establish yourself as an authority in your field, but you’ll also drive people to your site and services.

3. You don’t speak to (or identify) your ideal client.

If you can’t identify who your target audience is, how can you speak directly to them?

With good copywriting, your website speaks directly to the pain points your ideal client is facing and addresses how you offer the solution. You may not solve their problems, but you’re ready to walk with them as they work through their sh*t.

Are you ready to take the next step to improve your private practice website?

You don’t have to walk this journey alone!

I use a collaborative process that involves a Zoom call where we’ll go over:

  • Your project goals

  • Your ideal client/audience

  • Your pain points

Once I write a draft of whatever it is you’re seeking — whether that’s an “About Me” page, a blog, or copy for your entire website — YOU will provide an edit to ensure the writing sounds authentic to YOU.

Are you ready to take your private practice to the next level by investing in a mental health copywriter? Contact me today to set up a call! I’d love to help you out.
